Baltic Region Collaboration in Agenda 2030 Implementation: My Contribution in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals 2030

As a part of the Ukrainian presidency in the Baltic University Programme (BUP), the coordinating secretariat in Uppsala and our colleagues at the National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy in Kiev, Ukraine, have the pleasure to invite our students to the annual BUP Spring Students' Conference. The conference will take place in Moshchun Village (12 km from Kiev).
Please notice that during the conference, and in addition to an interesting program, the partcipants will have a unique possibility for a one day visit to the Chernobyl Disaster Zone. This to understand how to address technological and environmental safety challenges on the way to sustainability of human society. The visit is not easy to arrange and we hope that this part of the conference as well as visiting Kiev in spring time will be difficult to resist!
Students interested in the topic and coming from BUP member or participating universities are welcome to apply for participation in the conference. Students from BUP member universities will, however, be given priority. Please notice that all students applying should have a recommendation from the local BUP teacher, BUP contact person at the university, or the BUP national center.
The applications from Finland should be sent to the Finnish BUP Centre, , no later than 8 March 2017.

We are looking for motivated teachers coming from different disciplines covering aspects of sustainability in a broad sense, thus creating an inter-disciplinary and international learning environment, which can introduce students in complex issues related to sustainability. We are looking for teachers who are interested in trying something new – combining tall ship sailing with an unconventional teaching environment, which is extra-ordinary but can be both physically and mentally demanding. The teachers are expected to prepare and plan the course beforehand, as well as correct exercises and essays/reports after course. As English is the spoken language of the course, applying teachers are expected to have an excellent level of English skills.

This report presents recommendations on how education can advance the Agenda 2030 and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This entails advancing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by learning from and scaling the ESD initiatives that have been implemented worldwide during the UN Decade on ESD, 2005-2014. Overall, the recommendations include the development and implementation of ESD policies on different levels, as well as support structures for the implementation and follow up on such policies. The recommendations also include professional development in ESD on all levels in the formal education system, along with the development of standards that include ESD in accreditation of teacher education programs and certification of teachers. Moreover, the recommendations emphasize the need for a focus on how the relevance, meaningfulness and quality of existing subjects can be enhanced through the inclusion of ESD, rather than (or in addition to) separate ESD-courses.
