Seminar: Local Actors as Forerunners
Local actors as forerunners – concrete achievements and links to international covenants in Baltic Sea protection
A seminar to be held in Tallinn, March 16, 2011.
AIM
We claim that the role and potential of local actors in the Baltic Sea protection work is highly important and extends wide beyond the local borders. We aim to promote an exchange of practical experiences in problem solving and provide inspiration and ideas for further work.
IN BRIEF
Cities, municipalities and water utilities in the Baltic Sea Region are central actors in the implementation of international water protection covenants. In addition, voluntary commitments to improve the state of the Baltic Sea, such as the Baltic Sea Challenge initiative, further emphasize the importance of local actors. The seminar will highlight local potential and concrete local level achievements in the Baltic Sea protection work, within the framework set by the Helcom’s Baltic Sea Action Plan.
The event will provide a platform to an exchange of experiences and good practices. Networks of local actors and organisations will be encouraged to activate their members for voluntary work and actions. The seminar will also promote direct connections between local actors and international financing bodies, and introduce the Helcom’s Green List concept as well as the Baltic Sea Challenge and other networking opportunities.
TARGET GROUP
The main target groups will be civil servants and decision makers in water utilities, cities and municipalities, city organizations and associations of local governments in the Baltic Sea Region. In addition, the event will invite representatives from the ministries of the environment, EU Strategy for the Baltic Sea Region, investment bodies and the media.
