This report presents recommendations on how education can advance the Agenda 2030 and UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This entails advancing Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by learning from and scaling the ESD initiatives that have been implemented worldwide during the UN Decade on ESD, 2005-2014. Overall, the recommendations include the development and implementation of ESD policies on different levels, as well as support structures for the implementation and follow up on such policies. The recommendations also include professional development in ESD on all levels in the formal education system, along with the development of standards that include ESD in accreditation of teacher education programs and certification of teachers. Moreover, the recommendations emphasize the need for a focus on how the relevance, meaningfulness and quality of existing subjects can be enhanced through the inclusion of ESD, rather than (or in addition to) separate ESD-courses.
